In 2020, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) introduced the cost-reflective and service-based tariff (SBT) regime. The aim of this development was to ensure that tariffs paid by electricity customers in the country included the cost of electricity production and were also determined by the quality of service received. Despite this, there is still a bit of mistrust among customers regarding the cost of energy they receive. Many customers believe that even with tariffs being cost-reflective and service-based, they pay too much for electricity.
However, one of the most important ways electricity customers can reduce their energy bills and adjust to tariff hikes is by practicing energy efficiency.
